The stereotype of the self-made entrepreneur is everywhere. This scrappy individual has grit, gumption, smarts, stamina, and energy to spare.
HUSTLE is the big word these days. Give them a challenge and they’ll crush it. Drop a problem in their lap and they’ll figure out a way to solve it.
Give them a potential sale and they’ll close it.
Give them lemons and they’ll make lemonade…patent their process…franchise the rights to distribution around the world… and then sell the whole thing to Coca-Cola.
There’s nothing these self-made entrepreneurs can’t do with hustle and persistence.
When they reach the top of the success mountain, Frank Sinatra will already be crooning, “I did it my way.”
The only problem: It’s all a myth.
Success Is Not a Solo Act
“No matter how brilliant your mind or strategy, if you’re playing a solo game, you’ll always lose out to a team.” — Reid Hoffman
If there’s one thing I’ve learned on my way to over $5 billion in global sales, it’s this: growth requires a team. You can’t do it alone. No one can.
After you start enjoying some success as an entrepreneur, it might be tempting to think you can just keep doing what you’re doing and continue to grow.
But long-term success doesn’t work that way. What got you here won’t keep you here — and it certainly won’t empower you to reach the next level.
To experience 100X success or even 10X success, you need to challenge your current way of thinking. You have to be prepared to do things differently than what’s been done in the past — you can’t be a solopreneur.
If you want to achieve extraordinary results, you have to study and implement new, extraordinary methods — like building a team of world-class individuals.
You Need a Dream Team to Turn Your Dreams into Reality
“If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten.” — Anonymous
Let’s face it. There’s only so much of you to go around. And you’re not an expert in everything. That’s why you need a team you can trust to take your success to the next level.
If you’re ever going to realize your greatest dreams, you’ll need to build a team you can trust. Online marketing guru, Jeff Walker, says that one of his biggest business mistakes was not building a team earlier in his growth process.
Don’t hold back just because you may be uncertain about building a team or fearful of what might go wrong. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel to do this.
I want to empower you to boldly pursue your dreams. It’s what I’ve done for entrepreneurs for decades and, let’s face it, everyone who sells anything has at least a little bit of entrepreneur inside.
Here are three steps to help you get started on building your Dream Team.
1. Get Creative When it Comes to Building Your Team
“You can get everything in life you want, if you’ll help enough other people get what they want.” — Zig Ziglar
Getting creative about building a team means getting creative with your network — including who they are and how they can help you and you can help them. When you are starting to build your team, you may want to barter with others to leverage each other’s strengths.
Start by making a list of the people in your network who are experts at something and list their areas of expertise and how they might be able to help you grow. Think big and see what happens.
2. Invest Only in High-Character People You Can Trust
“Real networking is about finding ways to make other people more successful.” ―Keith Ferrazzi
Sometimes not knowing what you don’t know can paralyze you from acting. But all you need to do is the next right thing. What is the next right thing you can do to start growing your team?
You already have a network of people who you respect and trust. One of the best ways to begin building your dream team is to reach out to them and ask them “Who do you know that I should know?”
Do this each time you form a relationship with someone new and make a list of people you should reach out to. Remember that your team is a reflection of you so they need to share your values and vision for your growth or you’ll continually be at odds.
3. Don’t be Afraid to Dream Big and Shoot for the Stars
“Aim high. You may still miss the target, but at least you won’t shoot your foot off.” — Lois McMaster Bujold
When it comes to building a Dream Team you have to think outside the box and think big. Really big. Big growth doesn’t happen with a mediocre team. Aim high.
Start by answering these questions and then pursue relationships with the people you think of by adding value first. You have to do something to be worthy of their attention before you can ask them to be a part of your team.
Here are five types of people that must be a part of any dream team:
- Mentors
Who has traveled the path that you hope to travel?
- Coaches
Who has the knowledge and experience to guide you to the next level?
- Experts
Which advisors have highly-specialized knowledge in key areas related to your business?
- Celebrities and Influencers
Who would be a good fit to help you get the word out about your idea, product, or service?
- Digital Marketing Gurus
Who knows how to harness the power of our connected world to get the word out about your idea, product, or service?
Your Dream Team Begins to Form When Your Mindset Begins to Shift
Teamwork begins with a mindset shift.
You have to stop thinking like a solo act and start thinking like a team leader. The success battle is won or lost between your ears — never forget it.
Every entrepreneur needs to be a salesperson. But not every salesperson is necessarily an entrepreneur or has all the business-savvy and skills necessary to grow to the next level — that’s why they need to team with those who do.
You may need to team within your own corporate world. You may need to team with friends, or even family members to push your success to the next level. Or you may need to seek some investment to get the capital you need to take your proven idea, product, or service to the next level — and every investor will want to know more about your dream team.
If you don’t have one, you need to figure out how to assemble one.
Bottom line — the right team in your corner multiplies your impact and effectiveness exponentially.
Because success is not a solo act.
